There were a number of high scoring games last weekend and some very shocking upsets. Below are five players who were impressive for their respective clubs.
5 Jamie Collins (Sutton United)
Jamie Collins of non-league Sutton United was the hero of the town on Sunday, as his 53rd-minute penalty was the deciding goal in the massive upset against Championship heavyweights Leeds United.
The Sutton United captain scored via the penalty spot after the Maxime Biamou was fouled in the box. Collins will have another chance at giant killing when Sutton United take on Arsenal in the Round of 16.
4 Diego Falcinelli (Crotone)
Crotone went into their match against Empoli knowing that a defeat will definitely consign them to the Serie B next season.
The 18th-placed team were in need of a hero, and they found one in Diego Facinelli who delighted the fans with a scintillating hat-trick as the hosts won 4-1.
He scored the deciding goal of the game in the 56th minute, before adding the gloss on a fine victory with two goals in added time.
3 Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)
RB Leipzig continued their surprise title challenge with a morale-boosting victory over highflying Hoffenheim, ending the latter’s unbeaten run. Timo Werner was one of the standout performers, with his 38th-minute goal cancelling out Hoffenheim’s 18th-minute lead.
The goal was Werner’s 11th in the league this season, and his stellar performance was key in a result that ensures the underdogs stay in touching distance of league leaders Bayern Munich.
2 Mauricio Lemos (Las Palmas)
Mauricio Lemos was a rock at the back for Las Palmas in their impressive 3-1 victory against Valencia on Monday.
The young Uruguayan defender was a thorn in the flesh of the likes of Nani and Santi Mina, with the forwards barely getting a sniff on goal.
He also scored the decisive goal off a well-taken free-kick to seal the points for the underdogs. More performances like this from the young defender and he will almost certainly spark interest from the league’s big boys.
1 Bafetimbi Gomis (Olympique Marseille)
Bafetimbi Gomis reminded the entire world what he is about this weekend, with a spectacular man of the match performance.
The French International scored in the 4th, 20th and 78th minutes of the game as Marseille ran riot over Montpellier.
The goals bring Bafetimbi Gomis league haul this season to 13, in what has been an inspired move back to France. Marseille are in the running for a European place, and more performances like this from Gomis will go a long way in aiding their quest.
